Screenshots: Dist-upgrade of Ubuntu ppc E-mail
Written by Administrator
Thursday, 11 October 2007

I had  the chance to do  an  upgrade-dist  of Ubuntu 6.10 ppc (PowerPC edition) recently

when my 3-year-old daughter  corrupted  her  Mac OS X Panther on her PowerPC-based

Mac mini.  She uses  the Mac Mini  mainly  for Movies playback  and learning on how to

type. I decided to dual-boot  Mac OS X Panther  on  my  daughter's  2-year-old Mac mini

a few months ago with Ubuntu 6.10 ppc,  because of  the fear  that she may destroy her

Panther and  I do not have the time to fix the Panther. I called it the "911 strategy". The

reason why  I  chose Ubuntu 6.10 ppc  instead  of  its counterparts ( Fedora, Yellow Dog

or openSUSE)  was a very simple one.  My daughter could turn off  the  Ubuntu 6.10 ppc

even though it was  her first time with Ubuntu 6.10 ppc.  Maybe  it's  something that she

has  acquired while playing with Mac OS X and Windows XP.

For your information Ubuntu 6.10 aka Edgy Eft  is supported until April 2008 and

Ubuntu 7.04 aka Feisty Fawn  will be supported  until October 2008.   Of  course,

those who  had opted to install the PowerPC version of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS on their

Apple Macs will receive a very much support,  till June 2009.

I opted for an upgrade to Ubuntu 7.04 ppc  via  the  internet  with the  help of the

graphical  tools found on the Ubuntu 6.10 ppc.  After  I updated  the Ubuntu  6.10

ppc, I launched the Update Manager located  at System Menu-->Administration.

Image

A dialog appeared after the Update Manager  reached  the stage of fetching and

installing the upgrades.  I was asked if I wanted to start the upgrade.

Image

Started fetching the files.  It  took  5  hours  to complete.  It  was worth the wait.

I was really hoping to see new features of 7.04.

Searching for obsolete packages!  Well, the reasons why I wanted  to upgrade

to Ubuntu 7.04 ppc was because  I wanted  to use  the  Desktop  Effects tool

and  also  the  Restricted  Drivers Manager  tool,  besides  the supports for

Ubuntu 7.04 untill October 2007.

Image

Found  the  obsolete packages  and I was asked  if  I wanted  to remove those

obsolete packages.

Obsolete packages were being removed!

Completed   my  dist-upgrade  of  Ubuntu-6.10 ppc  to Ubuntu-7.04  ppc.

Nothing untoward occured during  the whole process and  my daughter

could still play her ppracer and  my  wife  can  still use it to update  her

blog  securely off and on.  With the availability of  the Desktop Effects

tool,  I  could  make  the windows on  the Ubuntu 7.04 ppc,  residing  on

my daughter's  Mac mini wobble and the desktop rotate  like a cube.

Image

By the way, I am still slowly contemplating on whether to install openSUSE

10.3 ppc and also the upcoming Fedora 8 ppc, since Ubuntu ppc is not offici-

ally supported by Canonical anymore.  If  I can coax  my daughter  to let me

install Fedora 8 and openSUSE 10.3, I might have the time to do  a  review

on those PowerPC-based Linux distribution,  which are still offically suppor-

by Fedora  and openSUSE.  Thank  you  very  much  for  going  through  my

short article/screenshots.
