The darling of user-friendly SimplyMEPIS 7.0 beta1 is officially out on 17th of August 2007. If you can recall, the Prebeta of SimplyMEPIS 7 was released on 2nd of August 2007. It is based on the stable Debian Etch with lots of recompilation of the up-to-date Debian and Ubuntu sources. The good news is that Debian Etch users can add the latest SimplyMEPIS pool to their sources.lst file without having to leave Etch.
The major changes since the Prebeta release are the availability of Linux kernel 2.6.22.3, kernel drivers for the Ralink family of wireless cards, other updated drivers, KDE 3.5.7 updates, better appearance of the boot splash, and of course, the latest Debian Etch security updates. Well, another new feature is that you can boot with the aufs rw filesystem. The beta1 iso images can be downloaded from here.
